Coach Coker has begun his recruiting, extending offers to some of San Antonio’s best. Including, “Brackenridge teammates Malcolm Greer and Earon Holmes and Altair Rice Consolidated defensive tackle Chris Dorsey have become the first players to commit to Larry Coker’s fledgling football program at UTSA.” (Source: MySA.com) The first steps have been taken and it looks like UTSA is moving ahead as scheduled.
The Roadrunners have extended offers to several other area players, including Brackenridge running back Willie Culpepper and Bandera quarterback Cole Hubble. Culpepper rushed for 1,506 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Hubble led the San Antonio area in total offense with 3,682 yards (2,091 passing, 1,591 rushing).
“I’m extremely happy,” Hubble said. “It’s my first offer, but I’m going to sit back and see what happens. That’s my dream, to play football. It would be great to help start the program there.”
Coker, who cannot comment on players until they sign, has said the Roadrunners will try to secure roughly 25 players for their first recruiting class. The team won’t begin play until 2011 in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). Though no timetable has been set, the goal is to eventually join the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A).

“This is an exciting time for athletics at UTSA and we had a great group of finalists,” said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. “We are exceptionally pleased that Larry Coker has accepted our offer to organize and lead the first Roadrunner football program and we all look forward to starting a new tradition at UTSA.”
“We are extremely thrilled to be able to announce Larry Coker as our first head coach,” said UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey. “To be able to bring in somebody of his caliber and with his resumé to start up our program is a wonderful thing for the university and the community.”
